April the Tapir

Tapirs are relatives of the rhinoceros and live in the forests of Central America. They are herbivorous, feeding on leaves, buds, twigs, water plants, and fruits. The Belize Zoo is working to establish a captive breeding center for these animals. When mature a tapir can weigh 800 pounds.

Tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) are also known as mountain cow or danto.

Status: Endangered
