Pennsylvania Animals: White-tailed Deer

drawing by Nick

My animal is the white tailed deer. They are very interesting animals. Deer are a medium sized animal. The male/boy grows antlers in the spring. It lives in tall grass and woods. More than twelve million live in North America. It is found all across Southern Canada and every one of the lower 48 states, Mexico and Central America. Deer eat grass, leaves and when it is winter when there is no grass and leaves, they eat bark. Their enemies are people at hunting season. Some other enemies are the cougar, wolf, coyote, bob cat and the lynx. It protects itself by running away and by hitting their enemies with their antlers. Their scientific name is Odocoileus virginianus. They are over-populated in Pennsylvania. -Nick
