Pennsylvania Animals: Groundhog

drawing by Dan

The groundhog lives underground. If one of its enemies tries to attack it, the groundhog will probably bite. We sometimes use it to tell if it is going to be a longer winter or a shorter winter. The groundhog eats plants. It lives all around western and eastern Pennsylvania. -Dan

My animal is called a groundhog. Its scientific name is Marmota monat. It's small, fat and brown. It lives under rocks and under the ground. It eats grass and leaves. It's enemies are dogs and foxes. It bites when it gets scared. It is interesting how it digs. -Tim

"Groundhog being chased to it's hole" drawing by Seth

The woodchuck lives underground in a deep big hole. The woodchuck has black eyes, long teeth, brown fur, sharp claws and a puffy tail. It eats green buds and dry grass. Its enemies are dogs and foxes. The mother takes care of the babies and there are usually 5 to 10 of them. It protects itself by listening and watching. The interesting thing about the woodchuck is that it looks like its mother. -Seth
